Let’s talk about something I think is one of the most underrated yet life-changing skills we can develop. . . standing in your personal power. Now, that might sound a bit lofty or abstract, but stick with me—it’s about stepping into the driver’s seat of your life with confidence and authenticity. And honestly, who doesn’t want that?

As a counsellor, I’ve seen so many people hold themselves back, often without even realising it. Whether it’s because of fear, self-doubt, or the idea that they have to fit into someone else’s version of who they ‘should’ be, it all comes down to one thing. . . feeling powerless in their own lives.

But here’s the thing—your power has always been there. Sometimes, it just gets buried under all the layers of expectations, past experiences, and the stories we tell ourselves. The good news? You can reclaim it.

What Does It Mean to Stand in Your Personal Power?

Standing in your personal power means embracing your true self—quirks, flaws, strengths, and all. It’s about recognising that you don’t have to shrink or apologise for taking up space in the world. It’s not about being controlling or forceful, but about owning your decisions, your voice, and your worth. It’s the quiet confidence that comes from knowing you have value simply because you exist.

Standing in your personal power is essential for emotional and mental well-being. When you’re in tune with who you are and what you need, you’re far less likely to feel stuck or overwhelmed by life’s challenges. You begin to navigate the world from a place of self-trust rather than seeking external validation or approval.

Signs You’re Not Standing in Your Power

Sometimes, we don’t even realise we’ve given our power away. It can show up in subtle ways, like:

  • People-pleasing
  • Constantly putting others’ needs and desires ahead of your own.
  • Fear of rejection or judgment
  • Staying quiet or small because you’re worried about what others will think.
  • Self-doubt
  • Second-guessing your abilities or decisions, even when deep down you know what’s right for you.
  • Feeling stuck or unfulfilled
  • Like you’re living someone else’s life or following a path that doesn’t feel like yours.

Sound familiar? You’re not alone—many of us have been conditioned to operate this way. But recognising these patterns is the first step to changing them.

Reclaiming Your Power: Where to Start?

So, how do you stand in your power when you feel like you’ve lost touch with it? Here are some steps I often guide clients through when they’re ready to reconnect with themselves:

1. Get Clear on Your Values

Your personal power is deeply tied to your values—those core beliefs that make you, ‘you’. What do you truly care about? What are your non-negotiables in life? When you’re clear on your values, it becomes easier to make decisions that align with who you really are, rather than who you think you should be.

2. Set Boundaries Like a Pro

Boundaries are a form of self-respect. They let others know what’s okay and what’s not in your world. More importantly, they help you protect your energy and emotional well-being. Learning to say “no” (without guilt) and prioritising your own needs is a key part of standing in your power.

3. Own Your Story

We all have stories we tell ourselves—about who we are, what we’re capable of, and what we deserve. But not all of those stories are true. In fact, many are just old scripts from childhood, society, or past relationships. To stand in your power, you need to rewrite those scripts in a way that empowers you. You are the author of your life—don’t forget that.

4. Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

Comparison is the thief of joy—and personal power. When you measure yourself against others, you’re essentially saying, “I’m not good enough as I am.” The truth is, no one else can be you, and that’s your greatest strength. Focus on your own journey, and celebrate the uniqueness you bring to the table.

5. Take Aligned Action

Finally, standing in your power isn’t just about mindset—it’s about action. When you make choices that are aligned with your values, boundaries, and authentic self, you begin to embody your power in a tangible way. It’s about walking the walk, not just talking the talk.

The Ripple Effect of Standing in Your Power

Here’s the beautiful thing. . . when you start standing in your personal power, it doesn’t just transform your relationship with yourself—it transforms your relationships with others, too. You stop seeking external validation and approval. You show up more authentically. You attract people who respect your boundaries and honour your truth. And most importantly, you start living a life that feels like it’s truly yours.

Standing in your power is an ongoing journey. There will be moments when you doubt yourself, when fear creeps in, or when you feel like you’ve lost your way. That’s okay. Just remember that your power is always within reach, waiting for you to tap back into it.
