As a counsellor, I often see people get caught in a cycle of constantly striving but never really pausing to celebrate their progress. It’s like running a marathon and not even giving yourself a pat on the back when you cross the finish line. You wouldn’t do that, right? But in everyday life, many of us do exactly that with our successes, big or small.

Why Do We Downplay Our Achievements?

There are plenty of reasons why we tend to minimise our accomplishments. Sometimes, it’s out of fear of coming across as arrogant or bragging. Other times, we might not feel like our achievement is “big enough” to be celebrated. Perfectionism also plays a big role here—you feel like no matter what you do, it’s never quite enough.

Then, there’s the infamous imposter syndrome. You might feel like you don’t deserve the praise or the success because deep down, you’re afraid you’re just faking it.
